A Thought before Thinkerbelle

Here's a place to collect thoughts some quick thoughts prior to my blog www.thinkerbelle.me. I'm a strategist hungry for knowledge. Crazy about fashion, the interweb, design, food and music.

Andrew Bird Pauses Paris

If this isn't the greatest description of an artists work, I don't know what is.

Andrew Bird’s songs are small Chinese treasure boxes and little Spanish dressers. Elaborately decorated, embellished with art, rich with a multitude of hidden drawers, and filled with tiny, unexpected boxes and surprises, his songs glide on with episodic advancements. In movements.

Education Across Cultures

Let's rethink what education really means...

3D Interactive Projections

Slightly obsessed. With good reason. A smattering of my favorites.

Sandrine Estrade Bouvier

Love this stuff. Simple clever little designs. If it doesn't at least put a smile on your face...I don't know what will.

Animated Shorts

Fabulous Frenchie. Charming.

Augmented Shadow

Amazing. So much of augmented reality experiments feel gimmicky. This one is just kind of a natural experience that grows out of a pretty mundane action--the creation of shadows. Bridging the worlds of reality, fantasy and virtual makes this particularly interesting..I like it. At the end of the day, it's a really beautiful expression of "play".

The "Nice" Sweat Shop

Only in Paris could a sweatshop be glamourous. Oh how I want to visit!!

Fabulous space in Paris is a crafters/coffee drinkers delight. A fun (cozy) mashup of artsy goodness. Get your Etsy on and head out to 13, rue Lucien Sampaix, 75010 Paris. Hope to be there in a couple weeks. Oh universe, please grant me this one wish!

Allegory of the Cave

Many months ago, I was struck by Plato's Allegory of the Cave. In case you aren't familiar watch the little vid attached, and here's a quick synopsis:

Plato imagines a group of people who have lived chained in a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Plato, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to seeing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not constitutive of reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.

The shadows are a great metaphor for where we have been in ye olde advertising world: the paradigm of a world of glossy images and superfluous words--a time and place where we talked AT people. The reality (real objects/communication/people!!) --people talking BACK, are the future. Sometimes reality is scarier than the safe cave we create for ourselves. Is it easier to just reside in the walls of the cave, watching the shadows of a different time pass by? Or are you willing to take a risk and stand up (and stand out) of the cave?

A new day...

Loved today's the3six5 post courtesy of Rick Liebling. Inspiring and timely, do check it out. I'm starting to be concerned about creating a quasi-awesome post around 7/17...

It’s funny how a thing like a new pair of shoes, or a new job, can change how you feel about things. I feel more in control of my life today than I have recently. Like I’m making the decisions rather than having the world make decisions for me (or about me).
